Our History
In 1998, three parents of Hunter College High School (HCHS) students, Agnes Lee, Ruixi Yang and George Jeng, established a non-for-profit organization. They gave the name of this organization “Hunter College High School Chinese Parents Association Inc.” It was the predecessor of now what is know as CAPA, The Chinese American Parents Association.
In these three founding parents’ mind, the organization was to provide a forum for the Chinese American Parents of HCHS students to interact with one another, to help students to strengthen their ties to their Chinese Cultural heritage, to help those Chinese parents who have difficulty communicating with school officials, and to organize social events and services to serve the New York Chinese Community.
After 24 years, CAPA has grown into a vibrant community of nearly 400 members. Members of this community permeate every industry and all corners of New York City, working hard, living an active life, and trying their best to raise future citizens for the country.
The current committee members of CAPA will take over the baton from their predecessors, inherit and develop the will of the founders by providing school-related information for new members of the community so to help these who are both excited and nervious to understand and to soon adapt to the intense and unique new life of Hunter; providing opportunities and places for parents to interact and communicate so to strengthen community cohesion and to allow friendship and mutual help to grow; providing community service opportunities for students so to help them better understand the society; hosting a biennial fall cultural banquet for community members so our community members can gather together, celebrating China’s profound arts and food culture.
这三位CAPA创始人是Agnes Lee, Ruixi Yang and George Jeng。
Our Mission
Established in 1998, the Chinese American Parents Association (CAPA) is dedicated to serving the Chinese American community at Hunter College High School (HCHS). Our mission is to foster connections among parents, support students, and act as a bridge between the Chinese community and the school administration.
CAPA achieves this mission through various means, including promoting Chinese cultural heritage, organizing events, and actively participating in various school activities. By providing a platform for communication and collaboration, we aim to enhance the sense of belonging for Chinese American students and families at HCHS.
Through our efforts, CAPA strives to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where all members of the HCHS community can thrive academically, socially, and culturally.
